โHow much does CCTV cost?โ has no single answer, because two systems with the same number of cameras can be priced very differently. The camera is only one part of the bill. Cabling, recording, storage, remote viewing, compliance and maintenance often matter just as much.
Here is what goes into a CCTV quote in Dubai, so you can understand the price and compare installers fairly.
โAsk what the system needs to prove, not how many cameras it has. That answer decides the right setup and the right price.โ
The main parts of a CCTV system
- Cameras: dome, bullet or PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom), indoor or outdoor
- Recorder: an NVR (network video recorder) for IP cameras, or a DVR for older analogue cameras
- Storage: hard drives sized for how many days of footage you need to keep
- Cabling and network: network cables, PoE (power over ethernet) switches and containment
- Monitor and remote viewing: a screen on site and an app for viewing on your phone
- Power backup: a UPS so recording continues during short power cuts
What affects the cost
1. Number and type of cameras
More cameras cost more, but camera type matters too. Outdoor, high-resolution, night vision and PTZ cameras cost more than basic indoor domes.
2. Resolution
Higher resolution gives clearer footage for faces and number plates, but needs more storage and network capacity.
3. Storage and retention period
How many days of footage you must keep decides the size of the hard drives. Longer retention means more storage.
4. Cabling and site conditions
Running cables through finished ceilings, between floors or across a warehouse takes more labour and materials than a small open-plan office.
5. IP or analogue
Most new installations use IP cameras, which give better image quality and easier expansion. Upgrading an old analogue system may mean replacing cables as well as cameras.
6. Remote viewing and integration
Mobile viewing, multiple sites on one app, or linking CCTV with access control and alarms adds setup work.
7. Compliance requirements
Depending on your business activity and location, your system may need to meet specific rules on camera placement, recording and retention (see the next section).
8. Maintenance
Cameras need cleaning, recorders need checks and hard drives fail over time. A maintenance contract adds a yearly cost but keeps the system recording when you need it.
โCompare CCTV quotes item by item: cameras, recorder, storage days, cabling, remote viewing, warranty and maintenance. A cheap quote often leaves out storage or cabling.โ
SIRA rules in Dubai
In Dubai, security systems including CCTV are regulated by the Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA). Many commercial premises must have their CCTV installed by a SIRA-licensed company using approved equipment, and must meet requirements on camera coverage and how long footage is kept.
The exact requirements depend on your business activity and premises, so check what applies to you before you buy. Your installer should be able to explain which rules apply and provide the documentation you need. If you are outside Dubai, other emirates have their own authorities and rules.
This is general information, not legal advice. Check the current requirements for your business with SIRA or the relevant authority.
Hidden costs to watch for
- Hard drives not included, or too small for the required retention
- Cabling charged separately after the quote
- Extra charges for setting up mobile viewing
- No UPS, so recording stops during power cuts
- Short warranties on cameras and recorders
- No maintenance plan after installation
Questions to ask an installer
- Is your company licensed for CCTV installation where my premises are?
- How many days of footage will this system store?
- Are cabling, hard drives and mobile viewing included in the price?
- What warranty comes with the cameras and recorder?
- Who maintains the system after installation, and what does it cost?
- Will you give us a camera layout plan before installing?
Our take
The right CCTV system is the one that covers the areas that matter, records clearly enough to be useful and keeps footage for as long as you need. Start with what you need to see and record, then size the system around that. A detailed quote that lists every item is a better sign than a low headline price.

The most common problem we see is a CCTV system that stopped recording months ago because a hard drive failed and nobody checked. Include CCTV in your regular IT checks.
